Saudi Arabia is a landlocked desert nation with scant native flora, and it struggles with serious environmental issues such water scarcity, soil erosion, and desertification. Yet, the nation has made great progress in recent years toward turning its desolate landscape into a greener and more sustainable environment, including the growth of new forests.
One of the key initiatives in this transformation is the “Green Saudi Initiative,” which was launched by the Saudi government in March 2021. The initiative aims to plant 10 billion trees across the country by 2030, which is expected to increase the country’s green cover from 1% to 10%. The “Green Saudi Initiative” involves planting a combination of indigenous and non-indigenous trees, including Acacia, Ghaf, and Sidr, in different regions of the country.
In order to accomplish this, the Saudi government has set up a number of nurseries and botanical gardens, where seedlings and saplings are raised before being planted in various areas across the nation. In order to explore environmental issues and create plans for boosting the nation’s green cover, the government has also established a number of research centers and institutions.
